Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia refers to pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot, usually at the area where the metatarsal bones are located (the long bones in the foot that connect to the toes).

Causes

It is commonly caused by excessive pressure or overuse, particularly in activities like running or jumping, and may also result from wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or having foot deformities like high arches or bunions.

Symptoms

- Sharp, aching, or burning pain in the ball of the foot
- Pain that worsens when walking, standing, or flexing the feet
- A feeling of having a pebble in your shoe
- Numbness or tingling in the toes

Treatment

Treatment typically involves rest, ice, proper footwear (with cushioning and arch support), and sometimes orthotic inserts. In more severe cases, physical therapy or cortisone injections might be recommended. Stretching and strengthening exercises for the feet and toes can also help alleviate symptoms.
