Shoulder Arthroplasty

Shoulder Arthroplasty

Shoulder arthroplasty, also known as shoulder replacement surgery, is a procedure performed to relieve pain and restore function in a shoulder joint affected by conditions such as arthritis, severe fractures, or degenerative joint diseases. It involves replacing parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components (prostheses).

There are three main types of shoulder arthroplasty
Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA):

In this procedure, both the ball (humeral head) and the socket (glenoid) of the shoulder joint are replaced with prosthetic components. It is most commonly performed in cases of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis where the joint cartilage has worn away.

Hemiarthroplasty

Only the humeral head (ball) is replaced with a prosthesis, while the glenoid (socket) is left intact. This is usually done when the glenoid is in relatively good condition, but the humeral head is damaged due to arthritis or trauma.

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA):

This procedure is used when the rotator cuff muscles, which are responsible for shoulder movement, are severely damaged or torn beyond repair. The positions of the ball and socket are reversed, with the ball placed on the shoulder blade and the socket on the arm bone. This allows the deltoid muscle to compensate for the damaged rotator cuff, restoring shoulder function.

Indications for Shoulder Arthroplasty

– Severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis causing pain and limiting mobility.
– Irreparable rotator cuff tears combined with arthritis.
– Complex fractures of the shoulder that cannot be adequately repaired with other methods.

– Avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply to the humeral head).
– Failed previous shoulder surgeries.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Post-surgery, patients typically undergo physical therapy to restore range of motion, strength, and function. Full recovery can take several months,

and outcomes depend on factors such as the type of arthroplasty performed and the patient’s overall health.
